Projects
Created by state legislation in 2008, the district receives state funding each year to be used for projects that will benefit the entire Gentilly community including economic development, beautification, and crime prevention.
Milne Boys Home
The redevelopment of the Milne Boys Home into the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC) Headquarters. Damaged by Hurricane Katrina, the historic property underwent an $11.2 million renovation in 2013 with funding from FEMA recovery money, City Bond funds, and State Capital Outlay funds through the GDD.
Crime Cameras
The installation of eight new crime cameras in the Gentilly neighborhood to help improve the New Orleans Police Department’s ability to respond to crime. Locations for the cameras were chosen based on public complaints and guidance by the NOPD’s 3rd District which polices the Gentilly community.
Utility “art boxes”
GDD and the Gentilly Gardens and Terrace Association in collaboration with Community Visions have commissioned nearly 50 painted junction boxes throughout the Gentilly neighborhood.
Welcome Signs
The installation of monument welcome signs at four main entrances to Gentilly at St. Bernard Ave. & De Saix Blvd., Paris Ave. & Robert E. Lee.
